EFI     Electronic Fuel Injection was developed to improve engine performance, emission and fuel economy. Sensors are constantly monitoring engine status and relaying the information to the electronic control unit. This unit then calculates the proper amount of fuel required by the engine to achieve optimal air-fuel ratio and sends a signal  to deliver the precise amount of fuel directly to the intake port. Computer Systems     Automobiles coming off the assembly line today have several computers, up to 8. Some or all can be tied together and one can affect the other. Sensors collect data such as temperature, manafold pressure, throttle position, rpm, coolant level, transmission status, ac status, and many others. The computer has to compare all the readings and adjust the amount of fuel and air needed to maintain the throttle setting. These readings and signals happen several thousand times per second. These are complex systems and require test equipment with multiple inputs and outputs to properly diagnose problems.
